BIP-444 e la Poetica del Protocollo

This book investigates the evolving cultural role of the Bitcoin protocol through the lens of BIP-444, arguing that the blockchain is no longer merely financial infrastructure but an emergent, decentralized archive—an “invisible museum” where blocks function as durable containers of collective memory. Against the backdrop of the rapid proliferation of Ordinals and inscriptions (2023 onward), the text frames non-financial data on-chain as aesthetic artifacts: traces of presence, narrative fragments, and politically charged gestures that transform transactions into cultural documents. Within this context, BIP-444 is read not only as a technical proposal aimed at limiting non-financial inscriptions via a (temporary) soft-fork mechanism, but as a performative act of algorithmic curation that forces an ethical confrontation with selection, censorship, and the “right to permanence” versus the “right to oblivion.” The analysis follows a dual track: first, it reconstructs a genealogy of inscription practices and examines OP_RETURN as both a pragmatic opcode and a poetic medium whose constraints become an aesthetic principle; second, it interprets Bitcoin’s governance and fork politics as collective curatorial processes in which consensus becomes a social-aesthetic negotiation over what the archive will preserve. Finally, the book explores Layer-2 and sidechain ecosystems (e.g., Lightning Network, RSK) as distributed “atelier” spaces that can host experimentation without compromising mainnet integrity, proposing a stratified model of cultural memory where technical design choices operate as cultural filters. Ultimately, the work positions protocol engineering as a form of cultural stewardship, where code, ethics, and aesthetics co-produce the future of digital heritage.
